Payton Bryk is a saxophonist originally from the suburbs of Chicago. Payton began his musical voyage by studying piano at the age of seven. He immediately became fascinated with all forms of music, teaching himself songs he heard on the radio. Payton was captivated by the human-like sound of the saxophone in middle school, and since picking up the instrument he has performed in various spaces throughout Chicago such as Navy Pier, The Jazz Showcase, Andy’s and Fulton Street Collective, playing everything from solo performances to big band shows.

He has been a member of the CYSO Jazz Band, the Youth Jazz Ensemble of Dupage, the Columbia Jazz Band, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Summer Jazz Academy, where he performed at the Caramoor Jazz Festival.

Now living in South Florida, Payton is working towards a B.S. in Music Engineering Technology at the University of Miami. Payton is constantly trekking through unexplored paths in his performances, letting his passions of art and the human experience guide him. His enthusiasm is present on and off the stage, and he enjoys connecting with people of all backgrounds.

  • Through his studying of the lineage of alto saxophonists in history and their improvised music synthesized with his love for today's contemporary voices, Payton strives to express his own life experiences in an insightful, familiar, and adventurous way.

  • Payton's compositions are in the contemporary vein, inspired by various sonic palettes found in American music. His compositions feature gripping melodic ideas that allow for improvisation to be woven in throughout.

  • Guided by his trained musical ear, Payton strives to capture the energy of a live performance through a recorded medium. He has a studio license at the Frost School of Music's prestigious Weeks Recording Studio, and he is an intern at Chicago recording studio Rax Trax.
